hair

I had a haircut today.

for the first time i've actually chosen to cut my hair. it's officially the shortest it's been in 6 years.

i know, for most of you this seems strange, but i've been forced to have short hair throughout school. i hated to be told how i should look or how i should wear my hair, or what clothes i should wear.

see, in South Africa's public school system, children are not encouraged to think for themselves.  basically we were trained to be good employees - which i guess has its merrits, but at the same time we were discouraged from thinking like entrepeneurs.

we are encouraged to engage in team activities, dress the same, have the same hairstyle.

anyway - that is not something that i could ever make peace with. i hated the whole consept, and rebelled as far as i could against it. i wore my hair as long as possible, actively avoided any senior class activities that discriminated against juniors, went out of my way to question the system.

anyway, it seems one cannot fight a stupid system successfully from the bottom, if you are a minority (most guys (i went to a school for boys) were quite happy being jocks and conforming to the system).  But my fight is not over, i hope to have the financial influence one day to change these structures from the top! to have a school system that encourages each individual to aspiret to be the best they can be, without telling people what they should be.

anyway, the point is, i cut my hair today, just to feel some change, maybe just to experiment with having shorter hair. anyhoooo it is short, but it is not close to being wihin the school requirements that still gouverns how my little brother may wear his hair.

Interesting comments on the South African school system.  Unfortunately it's not much different here (or at least in Texas).  The problem in TX is that the government essentially runs our schools instead of educators.  Even as a music teacher, it's dissapointing how much uniformity they want in the classroom.  I am now a private school teacher at a great school where they just want the kids to learn as much as they can about as many things as possible (no worrying about standardized tests and such.)  I feel a little guilty about not fighting the system from the inside, but I know that I am changing much more lives where I am now.

Cool hair! :)

I have seen this new hair, and I applaud all manner of self-actualisation, even those that start with cutting your hair. Will the next step be shaving your head? As far as I remember, that was also frowned upon at our glorious old school :P

Come on, do It, you know you want to!

On the plus side, you look like a cherub, I think :)

Hmm, btw, if you wanted to change the school system, do you really think it starts with a financial input? Shouldn't you rather be looking at changing the actual goverment legislation, rather than at funding more schools to become private? I don't know, just throwing random ideas at you…. catch.

Hey Franc, i don't know if you got my msg earlier but here it is again

Just thought I’d tell you that the hair cut looks good! I don’t know if you’re interested but I am a new shoe designer in Los Angeles and my vision is to donate a pair of shoes to a child in need for each pair sold. Anyway, I think you’re page is super cool and I am always looking for more support! I can definitely send you a free pair if you think they’re cool and you want to help the cause. Even an announcement or an ad to your top friends would help.

Wow……..  that was very courageous……you are not your hair……lol

But I hear ya…….it is a statement saying “I can have long hair if I want to”  …..  I had dated a few men in the past with long hair and they would have rather died than to cut their hair.  That really did take alot of courage and you are being a testament to the younger generation……

But what am I talking about…….I would love to cut my hair cuz it is hot and in the way……..but my bf loves long hair…….so hmm……I cannot be as brave as you.  Its a guy thing isnt it?…..loving chicks with long hair?

I don't thinks so. (disclaimer: my wife's hair is the longest of all the people i know.) i think she would look amazing with any hair - or no hair! but i'm a stong supporter of people having the right to look anyway they please - or at least wear their hair any way they choose to express themselves. I'm also pretty sure your bf also likes short dresses, but you probably don't always wear short dresses just to keep him happy, do you? I'm sure he would love you the same either way. - and the best thing about hair - it grows. (well, sometimes…)
